Project description:
The aim of the project is focused on improving snow observations integrating remotely sensed data and ground-based observations. This approach will enhance the capability of optical remote sensing to characterize snow/ice surfaces and to estimate the fraction of snow cover. The methodology will be developed on a selected test site (Svalbard Islands, Norway) using Sentinel 2/3 data (level 1c), Landsat 8 OLI and additional ground-based observations. The images obtained by the censored webcams available in the study site will be processed in order to be merged with the other data in the repositories considered in the project. The webcam images will be processed using state-of-the-art algorithms in order to estimate the fraction of snow cover in different locations. Spectroradiometric surveys will be performed in situ in order to enrich the spectral library already available for ground-thruthing purposes in Svalbard Islands.
