Project description:
This project is a part of a wide T-MOSAiC experiment that aims to monitor active layer depth, snow depth, soil properties and vegetation cover along a transect at a number of sites across the Arctic using a standardised protocol. The understanding of the T-MOSAiC experiment is that a standardised protocol is needed to compare measurements across the Arctic as well as to highlight differences in the rate of permafrost thawing due to the influence of local conditions and microtopography.rnCollected data are shared in the T-MOSAiC permafrost thaw database through a dedicated app (myThaw). We choose a transect located in the Bayelva basin, where a number of CO2 flux measures (NEE and ER) by a dynamic flux chamber, atmospheric and soil climate parameters and a vegetation survey took place during summers 2018 and 2019 and will be repeated in the following years.rnActive layer depth and snow cover will be measured at 1 m distance over a transect 10 meters long. Vegetation survey will also take place. The data collected in this coordinated experiment will populate a database which represents the first standardised collection of information about the active layer depths across the Arctic, also relating them to a standardised soil and vegetation survey, to be used for further pan-arctic studies. In addition to the requested parameters, we will also collect climate variables as air, soil and snow temperature, air and soil humidity, solar radiation and, at least once a year during the summer campaign, CO2 fluxes.rn
