Project description:
Winter-CZ aims at establishing a long-term observatory of winter CO2 fluxes and microbiological activity in tundra soils during the non-vegetative season and their ongoing changes in Ny Ålesund.rnIn this framework, we shall design, test, install and continuously operate a new and state-of-the art fixed monitoring station for measuring winter CO2 fluxes between snowpack, soil and atmosphere and the related meteo-climatic variables at the Ny Ålesund research station in Svalbard, complementing the existing CNR infrastructures of CZO@Bayelva and TMPT@CNR_NYA projects with a new fixed station for measuring CO2 fluxes from snowpack and frozen soil; soil, snow and meteorological variables; and soil microbial composition and activity. The work will be done in the framework of T-MOSAiC program.rnThese measurements will be coupled with periodic microbial sampling to characterize the soil microbial composition and activity. This infrastructure integrates the existing Eddy Covariance station installed at the Climate Change Tower in the Bayelva basin, continuously operating for the whole year, and the portable flux chambers equipped with an IRGA (Infrared Gas Analyser) used to measure CO2 and H2O fluxes during summer.
