Activity of last year postponed within INTERACT III project. In this proposal, we have combined two different approaches to look at different climate change scenarios and there impacts on the methane and carbon dioxide balance of the high Arctic Ecosystem in Svalbard. The combined effort secures the availability two people in the field while minimizing costs and transport. These two different approaches originate from two circumpolar efforts for upcoming synthesis regarding climate feedbacks from the Arctic: - Future plant communities influence on methane consumption This part will utilize the network of long-term climate manipulation experiments within the International Tundra Experiment, with established sites at both Ny-Ålesund and at Endalen/Longyearbyen. The site in Ny-Ålesund is run by Angela Augusti (CNR-Italy ), while the site in Endalen is operated by Ingibjörg Svala Jónsdóttir (University of Iceland). Extreme weather events influence on greenhouse gas fluxes This part will utilize the established rain-on-snow experiment in Adventdalen run by Brage Hansen (NTNU ) and Ingibjörg Svala Jónsdóttir (University of Iceland) to assess and measure changes in fluxes and vegetation. As a second part this project will utilize the rain-on-snow and ground ice monitoring conducted by Jean-Charles Gallet and Jack Kohler (NPI ) in the surrounding of Ny- Ålesund.
