Project description:
Summer season is the period of greatest input of local dust and pollutant sources to atmospheric particles upon Svalbard Islands due to thawing. The aim of the project is to characterize the natural (soil) and anthropogenic (pollutant) atmospheric particles upon Ny-Alesund during summer. Soil particles, in particular, will be characterized in order to distinguish local from long range sources of dust. Activities on ground include the survey and sampling of local dust sources (rock and soil outcrops) and atmospheric particles (airborne dust) over them. Rock, soil and dust samples will be characterized for petrography, geochemistry and mineral chemistry in order to find out their mutual relationships and to quantify the contribution of local soil to airborne dust.
