Project description:
PHOTOPLANT aims to experimentally test the interaction between photoperiod and climate (temperature, water availability) in arctic and alpine grassland species. rnOur activity in Svalbard includes: 1) the relevee of snow bed vegetation in proximity of Ny Alesund. For this activity it may be necessary to go out of the boundary of the Ny Alesund area for one or two days in 2024, so we may need support for this, as nobody in the research group has a firearms certificate. For this activity we may also need some space in a "dirty" lab to dry and organise plant and/or seed samples. 2) the collection of 30 snow bed vegetation swards (authorization request under evaluation). This activity may require to go out of the boundary of the research base in the same days as above. 3) the set-up of a common garden with some of the collected sward (authorization request under evaluation). For this activity we will need to find a suitable place to set up the common garden possibly in proximity of the research station. We will also install one or two Open Top Chambers and two to three dataloggers. For this activity we will work mainly outdoor. 4) the export of about 20 swards to Italy (authorization request under evaluation) where they will be used to set-up another common garden. For this activity we will need to ship swards to Italy. In 2024 we foresee two field missions of approx. 5 days each, the first one in the first half of July (depending on snow cover) involving 2-4 people (experiment set-up), the second one at the end of August with 1-2 people. In 2025 we foresee two field missions of approx. 5 days each in the same period as above involving 1-2 people. Materials to be shipped from Italy to Ny Alesund in 2024 (beginning of July) are: approx. 40 pots for the vegetation swards, 2 Open Top Chambers, 3 dataloggers, spare material for digging for the collection of swards and set up of the common garden. Materials to be shipped from Ny Alesund to Italy in 2024 are approx. 30 vegetation swards (mid-July).rnWe foresee an average of about 4500 €/2 people per trip in double room including board, flights and the costs of material shipping (only for the first trip). The costs are covered by the project PRIN PHOTOPLANT.
