Project description:
A comprehensive characterization of the locally emitted and LRAT CECs with complementary techniques will be performed in the framework of COSMOS aiming to screen for the presence and dispersion capabilities of contaminants of both tire-derived compounds, plastic and anti-corrosive additives near trafficked roads of Longyearbyen in the cryosphere and soil systems. Less impacted roads in Ny-Ålesund will be used as a comparison, resulting in a gradient of low and high traffic areas. Furthermore, COSMOS will discriminate between local and long-range sources and evaluate their impact in a background region. For instance, the determination of benzothiazoles in urban highway runoff are well documented and the main source attributed to the traffic load, however, wet and dry deposition that could both derive from LRAT were not considered. With the proposed project, we will focus on local inputs and consequent impact of CECs around selected areas in Longyearbyen and Ny-Ålesund, representative for the whole Arctic.
