Investigating known and unknown PFAS in the Arctic snow (SNOWFAS)

Project description:
Over 14.000 different per- and polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) substances are currently manufactured and potentially released into the environment. However, current methodological approaches only target a limited number of them (20-40), therefore limiting our understanding on the true magnitude of PFAS pollution. SNOWFAS will address this knowledge gap by applying a new hybrid targeted/non-targeted screening method to identify known and unknown PFAS in Svalbard snow. Daily surface snow sampling will be performed at the Gruvebadet clean snow area (GVB) to evaluate PFAS phototransformation. Snowpit samples will be collected at GVB before and after a Rain-on-snow event to evaluate the mobility of PFAS in the snowpack. Snowpit samples will be collected at Edithbreen to assess long-range transport for PFAS. Required support from Dirigibile Italia: labspace to process the samples and enrich them on SPE cartridges.
