Project description:
Long-term chemo-physical monitoring of the seasonal snow cover in Spitzbergen. The objective of the SnowPRO project consists of gathering all the geochemical and physical observations conducted on the annual snowpack in the Spitsbergen area since 2011. The monitoring program is based on two different activities. The first is carried out at the Gruvebadet snow research site (GSRS, Ny-Ålesund) by permanent CNR logistics staff in the field and consists of weekly sampling and manual measurement of snow cover throughout the snow season (Nov-May). To aid in the interpretation of the chemical records obtained, an automatic nivometric station (ANS) was installed at the GSRS in November 2020 for continuous observation of the physical and optical properties of the snowpack. The second activity of the project takes place once a year, usually in April, and involves sampling the annual snow layer and manual measurements of the temperature and density profiles on several glaciers monitored in the vicinity of Ny-Ålesund.
