Chemical-Physical Characterization of New Mineral Dust Source Areas in Svalbard Archipelago (SVALDUST)
IADC_id: 820

Call year: 2026

Project description:
The project aims to improve our understanding of emerging mineral dust sources in the Svalbard archipelago, where glacier retreat is exposing new erodible surfaces. The work combines field mapping, soil sampling and laboratory analyses to characterise the physical and chemical properties of these materials, including their size-segregated fractions (PM1, PM2.5 and PM10). By integrating these results into a georeferenced database, the project will create a set of dust fingerprints that can support source attribution studies in the Arctic. Ultimately, this research will help evaluate the potential influence of these new dust sources on climate processes, snow and ice albedo, and local ecosystems in a rapidly changing polar environment.
