Project description:
With C3 project we propose to investigate the linkages between Climate, Cryosphere and Carbon using a new and multifaceted organic proxy approach. We will implement our study in the Kongsfjorden (Svalbard) as natural laboratory to examine the climate-induced destabilization of sea ice and permafrost carbon in the last 1000 years focusing on three key periods: (i) the Medieval Warm Period (MWP, ca. 1000 years ago), (ii) the Little Ice Age (LIA, ca. 400 years ago) and (iii) the modern global warming (last couple of decades). To do so, we will use sediment cores as archives of climate-induced destabilizations in the fjord.
National/International Cooperation:
The research proposed here will benefit of the extraordinary experience of Prof. Belt (Plymouth University), pioneer in the study of biomarkers as sea ice proxy. Prof. Belt established and further developed the method in the Arctic (IP25) and he is now actively collaborating in the Antarctic with the PI. In addition, he will provide custom-made standards (not available on the market) for the quantification of highly branched isoprenoids.rnThis project will also benefit of parallel Italian projects carried out in Kongsfjorden. Projects include SNOW and FIKO (Dr. Miserocchi, Dr. Langone and Dr. Giglio, CNR-ISMAR-). By sharing ship time and logistics as well as the experience from previous campaigns, the field activities will be significantly more efficient and economically beneficial for all parties.
